this place was clean, good location next to union square and comfy. stopped here as a treat from the basic hostels and it give us just that! would def recommend and go back

We found this to be the worst hotel we stayed in during our 3 week trip to USA (although it was far from being the cheapest). The room was small, the lighting was inadequate to read by, the decor was garish, the ceiling was in poor condition and flaking off, an iron had burnt a mark in the carpet, the towel rail for 6 towels was only 18" long, we were only given 4 clothes hangers for 3 people, there was no soap or towels in the shared bathrooms, there was no lounge and as a result people sat on the stair area for using their laptops, the mattresses were protected with plastic which made the beds hot and sweaty, the bedspreads looked dirty; I could go on... On the plus side the hotel is well situated and they were accommodating about keeping our bags before and after check-in. After seeing such positive reviews from others we were disappointed.

Great neighborhood. Staff very helpful. The price and the location offset the shared bathroom. The bathrooms are shared however they are private and were usually vacant.

Researching "discount" hotels for 3 weeks or so made me weary of these hotels. For every 5 reviews i read, there woul be 2 or 3 horror stories. So waiting until a week before my stay, pickedthe cheapest hotel that had rooms available holding my breath that it would be good. We got to the Hotel around 8pm. It took literally 5 minutes to check in. The Hotel itself was beautiful. We went up to out room and was amazed at how clean, spacious, and equipped it was. It had everything except a toilet and a shower (which was shared down the hall) We went to check out the bathroom and it was immacculate. We only stayed 1 night and didnt see another person on the way to the bathroom all night or the next morning. We will DEFINATELY be back, this Hotel was AMAMZING!!!

very good if you want a CHEAP stay in manhattan ... not so good if your looking for luxury! hotel is shared bathrooms but is very clean and plenty of bathrooms so we didn't have to wait in line for anybody. the hotel is very old and the rooms don't look like they have been updated for a very long time! its very good if all you need is somewhere to sleep. i would recommend this hotel to anyone going to New york on the cheap.

The room and all amenities were nice and clean. The staff were very courteous and efficient. I'd definitely go back there!

a 5 min walk from Union square. it was pretty nice for the price. great for students. no bathroom attached to the room though.

A good value for NYC. Not the biggest or fanciest, but clean, comfortable, & quiet. And how much time are you really going to spend at the hotel anyway.

It's old and a little dingy, but very clean and for the price, you can't beat it. It's close to subway and easy to get anywhere. The shared bathroom is very clean and has been redone. The double bed is a little small for two, but manageable.

Great location (near Union Square), nice bathrooms, clean room. My only complaint is that the wireless signal is weak in the upper floors. I was on the 7th floor, but I took my computer down to the 5th floor and it was fine.

the only problem we had with the hotel was the lack of hot water in the showers. otherwise, everything was clean, safe and comfortable. excellent location very close to NYU, relatively close to the subway. we've stayed in lots of budget hotels and hostels around the US and europe, and this one was the best.

I've stayed at Hotel 17 on several occasions and aI'm always happy with the service and the accomodations. The location is great - a short walk to Union Square, the East Village, and Greenwich Village. The rooms are small but comfortable and the shared bathrooms are clean and convenient. If you're looking for an inexpensive place to sleep when you're visiting NYC, Hotel 17 is perfect.

Have stayed here many times, always a great stay!

Location of the hotel was excellent as was the care taken by staff on arrival and cleanliness of the room. Only couple of small issues were coming back late at night and room swipe card not working (twice) and also having to stay in a single room for first night as double bed not available - there was just one of me so this wasnt a huge problem at all. Would definitely recommend! Close to L train subways and plenty of restaurants/convenience stores around the corner.

I enjoyed this hotel. The bathroom's down the hall, the elevator was unreliable and the maid didn't even touch our room but the people were otherwise friendly and helpful. The room was clean and relatively comfortable, and I like the location just above the east village.

On vacation alone with my 11 year old son, first time in NY. Staff was very friendly and helpful!! sugested places to go and see. Rooms were clean, sharded bath was VERY clean!(felt it was cleaned every time it was used) I was scared to share a bath. Never waited to use bathroom. Old world feel, big wood doors, small slow elevator.. Loads of charm! Very safe location. Walked the streets all hours! LOVED IT! Only down side, beds were hard...

Great location, spacious rooms, sink in the room is a real plus, bathrooms where clean. The only prob i had has the showers were had to get the right temperature setting, and at times when it seemed everyone was taking a shower at the same time the water pressure became very low. But this only happen once in the 3 different times i stayed here. Cant beat the quality of the hotel considering the price.

This hotel was located in ideal neighborhood for my purposes! It is a beautiful building, with comfortable rooms. The shared bathrooms were always clean, and available. Due to the neighborhood the room was quiet although facing the street. The little contact I had with the staff was excellent. This is a great Manhattan hotel, comfortable but not frivolous. And when in Manhattan who needs to spend much time in a room?

The location was unbeatable, great room, shared bathrooms are inpecable all the time, wifi in the bedroom included, the best place to stay in NY if you are on a budget, I will definetly return to stay and recomend it to everyone!!!!! Simply Loved it

My husband and I stayed at Hotel 17 over 4th of July weekend. We don't dig the Midtown area where most hotels are and were so happy to find this hotel. We stayed on the 8th floor and had very nice views from our room. I was a little skeptical about staying in a hotel room without a bathroom. This was really not an issue. The bathroom is clean and there are not that many rooms that use the same bathroom. You have a sink in your room, so you have a place to set up your bathroom supplies. This is walking distance to Union Square where you can pick up the subway. The neighborhood is my favorite in NYC and you will find tons of fantastic restaurants. We will definitely stay here again.

Besides the friendliness of the staff, comfort of the room, privacy, etc, I find the neighborhood very convenient and safe. I have stayed at this hotel at various times and will continue to do so again.

my stay was a very good experience, it began with the short walk to the hotel from union station subway, it was a quaint tree lined street. upon entering the friendly staff greeted us and showed us our room. Being new to travel to new york the idea of the european style of lodging but was really pleased to the style of the hotel. It was quaint and very beautiful style, narrow hallways, dark wood mouldings. It was beautiful. the park right across the street drew me in and kept me occupied for hours each morning relaxing in its lush foilage. This has to be one of the most beautiful areas of all of new york city. Tradigidy struck when i lost my credit card but the staff rose to the occasion and found my card and held it untill i returned to fetch it. Wonderful, location, friendly, I so want to return!

I'm very satisfied about this experience. The location is very good and the hotel offer a good service, cleanliness, with minimum price. The subway is 10 minutes away (on foot) and you can get trains to all directions(10 minutes to Time Square). This is a good place for your stay in New York.

The room was all they promised, clean, convenient, in a nice neighborhood and the staff was friendly. For the price I woudl stay there anytime...if you are lookibng for other ammenities then look elsewhere

Excellent location - was convenient to everything! The subway was a few blocks away & restaurants were just down the street. The staff was friendly & the rooms were a good size for the price.

Nice place to stay in Manhattan. Room was clean quiet and comfortable. A little on the small side but that is ok. Bathrooms immaculate! Wonderful location with many great cafes, bars, restaurants. groceries nearby.. Good value. Would not hesitate to stay again or recommend to others.

The room I got was pretty small when compared with other hotels. No view. Location was on a safe street with good acess to cabs and subway. If you are going to NY and just need a place to sleep and not hang out in your room it is a great deal.

I've been fortunate enough to stay here a few times and will gladly continue to do so. For me the location can't be beat. The staff has remembered me from previous visits and is always friendly. Cleanliness of any part of the hotel has never been an issue. The rooms are typical NY hotel rooms, a little smaller than you find in other cities as space is such a premium in the Big Apple, but at Hotel 17 the rooms feel cosy rather than small. Highly recommended.

For a "budget" traveler, this is a very good option. While you will share a bathroom/shower with other guests on your floor, the bathroom/shower was always available, always very clean, and always had plenty of hot water. There were two bathrooms/showers on our floor and we rarely had to wait for one to be available. The couple of times that we did wait, we waited only a few minutes. The neighborhood was nice, safe, clean, close to subway, etc. The hotel was clean. The staff was frienldy and helpful. If you want luxury and pampering, this is not the place for you. But, if you want a comfortable stay at a reasonable price (compared to other New York hotels), I would recommend Hotel 17. I would definitely stay here again.

I have stayed at this hotel at various times and it has always been great! Love the location, the comfort of the room, and how quick it is to check in and out. Highly recommend it.

For New York City this hotel is an excellent place for the money. Very clean and decent.

The room was slightly smaller than I expected but clean and the bed was very comfortable. It was a perfect location for my weekend. A little more than I wanted to spend but seems reasonable based on other places I looked at.

This was the ideal hotel for our weekend trip to NYC on a budget. We stayed Saturday night only. Double bed was fine because we're not obese. Shared bathrooms were ok since we did not take a shower and there was a sink in the room to wash face and brush teeth-- very convenient. Had to go to another floor to go to the bathroom once while someone else was showering, but did not mind. The location is perfect, especially at this price. Right near Union square, a veritable subway hub. There's a cute park at the end of the block if you want to enjoy your coffee outside in the morning. If you're looking for a luxury suite, this isn't it. This hotel is great for people who actually want to get out and see the city, and have a convenient, clean place to come back to sleep. There was also an air conditioner in the window-- nice to be able to control temp yourself. I will definitely recommend it to my friends and stay here again myself.

This was my second stay. It is surprisingly quiet for the City. staff was helpful and courteous. Sharing of bathrooms worked out ok. Water was sometimes cold and poor pressure in the shower. Clean. Bed was firm to the touch but we slept great. I will stay there again.

Friendly staff. Clean and charming facility. Convenient location. What's not to like?!
