Royal Crescent Hotel - Batas (Bath)

The location is perfect, the overall ambience classy and the reception and concierge staff very good. Public areas (lounges) very pleasant. Dinner in the restaurant was an excellent gourmet-style meal. However: there is no tea and coffee making equipment in the rooms and morning tea for two from room service is £8. The worst thing of all was the breakfast - £20 a head for poor buffet with wilting fruit, burnt fried bread and generally inferior "full English", cold toast, not enough butter, shortage of marmalade and poor service. I don't mind paying £20 for breakfast in a 5* hotel if it's a luxury breakfast - but I had a better one in a motorway service area the day before for £5.99!

Our week-long vacation in July took us to 5-star properties across southwest England and Wales. This was the only one of six "luxury" hotels we stayed at which had an American-quality COLD air conditioner! Of course, the hotel was magnificent, historic, first-rate, the staff was great, etc., but what made the Royal Crescent memorable was its awesome air conditioner. Go to the Royal Crescent and sleep comfortably with the windows closed and the air sweet and cool inside your room (the beds are awesome, too).

Public rooms draughty, especially the bar and restaurant. Had to walk from room to these across the garden in a howling wind. Coffee and petits fours at £5 turned out to be coffee and a couple of biscuits. NOT IMPRESSED. We have stayed at similar hotels 5* hotels and loved them.

A warm welcome in front of real fires, lively doorman who were very relaxed about moving our forty year old car and a charming receptionist combined with a fantastic location to make a great first impression. A handwritten welcome on the door is nice touch. The pool and spa are elegant and stylish, the gym is small and a bit tired. The cocktails and food were very good, especially breakfast. A beautiful hotel in one of the loveliest cities in Britain.

The hotel is lovely. Every effort is made to make the experience a good one. We were looking for a couple of days to have a break from work and relax, and this was the perfect place. Easy walk into town; we enjoyed a relaxing time in the spa; and the restaurant was lovely for a 'posh' meal. But for those not wanting to spend so much on dining, you can easily eat nearby. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Room service was a little eratic (we received half of our breakfast then the other half a bit later!). Overall, it was excellent and we would go back.

This once wonderful hotel is very sadly in need of an infusion of cash. A lot of cash. Shabby and tatty all around ... paint, carpets, etc. Outdated fixtures and audio video equipment etc. Whilst the management seem blinkered and somewhat un-aware of the state of things, the remainder of the staff, specifically in the restaurant, have an oppressed attitude.
