We stayed here about two years ago so we know what to expect. but they must have remodeled the rooms. Its new clean and they have a refrigerator and microwave.

Good value. Friendly staff. Easy parking.

I was very pleased with my stay at the Howard Johnson's hotel in San Francisco. It was in better condition than other hotels that I have paid a lot more money to stay in. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

We stayed here simply because of its convenient location to the San Francisco Airport. We got in late (around 11:30pm) to the airport and tried to catch the free shuttle to the hotel. After talking to the hotel manager several times and being assured that the shuttle was on its way, and waiting about 40 minutes, we just took a cab. The room was alright and worked for a night. We were able to take the shuttle back to the airport the next morning in order to catch the BART train into the city.

I would say the room size was great for 4. Not sure if I would stay more than one night. Bed a little hard. But over all clean rooms, staff was nice, good continental breakfast.

Beds hard? Perhaps compared to home, but for a hotel it is great - pillow top in fact! If there is another 2 star hotel with pillow top beds I'd love to find it. The room is a bit short on floor space, but the convenience of a microwave and fridge help make up for it. The hotel staff was nothing short of pleasant. I've been at 5 hotels in area the past 3 weeks and this is my favorite in the SFO area.

This is a good hotel if you are staying one night and are catching a flight at SFO. They have a free shuttle that starts around 4am. Otherwise, if you are touring San Fransico, I would not recommend it.

It is not as close to pier 39 as it advertises. It was clean and the beds where a bit hard. Its a bit out dated but it did what I need it to do, provide me with a place to stay for a couple of days.

This hotel is fine for those who are looking for one night stays. The room was clean and very adequate. Nothing special. The location was good and the price we paid was very good. However, the service of the front desk employees was terrible. The courtesy shuttle did not stop at the hotel unless you were waiting on the street. And don't ask for anything because you won't get any help, unless you want to pay extra to get that help!

Night clerk needs to be more customer service trained! He was short, and anxious.

For the price the hotel exceeded expectations. The room was very nice with all appliances (TV, cable box, coffee maker, microwave, iron, and refrigerator) working great. The neighborhood was fine but lacked local eateries. But with the refrigerator and microwave, it was compensated for. Only 20 minutes from Pier 39 for entertainment.

I found Howard Johnsons to be neat and clean, no problems with the front desk or my room. The morning complimentary food items were good. Having a little more selection to choose from would be better, perhaps fruit and yogurt.

Everything was perfect. There breakfast is a little bit on the weaker side, but other than that, it is a great place to stay.

this room was awful the tv only one station and the sound went in and out the front desk clerk was not cocern.I would not recommend this hotel to anyone

My husband and I always stay in this area when we go to SF as it is convenient for us. This was the first time we had stayed at the Howard Johnson's and couldn't have been happier. The room was clean and comfortable with a fridge, microwave & coffee maker. The man in the office was very friendly and helpful.

the front desk person wasn't really customer oriented. even if you call them from the room phone, it took them forever to response to your request.

I've stayed at this Hotel 3 times now and each time has been SUPERB. There accomodating at the front desk and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Plus, minutes from SFO. I will be staying there again, without a doubt!

I had a very poor room location - under the stairwell and vending machines next to my headboard wall. Manager was OK.

The staff is so friendly I'd like to give this the best rating I can honestly give. If you have an overnight stay this is perfect. All the parts work as they should - heater, shower, tv, no problem. reasonably clean. But just don't look for comfort due to noise from people and cars. Breakfast is white bread that can be toasted, cereal, an apple or orange and poppy seed muffin. So it's great to have something to start your day. Each room has a microwave and refrigerator so you can bring your own food. This place is close to the airport but not close to San Francisco. Note South San Francisco is not the southern part of San Francisco. There is a whole other town to go through before you can get to San Francisco. By car it's 15 minutes and 25 minutes to SF downtown.

Somebody kept trying to open our door at night, making us scared. We had to call them twice. Don't know if somebody got drunk or something. But the hotel's location is pretty good. They have shuttle bus to the airport.

The hotel provided the basic no frill stay. My main problem was although the hotel advertised to be pet friendly, they smacked me with a $20 pet fee upon check-in. Most hotels who charge pet fees are upfront about them. I would not have stayed here if I had known they had such a large pet fee (1/3 of the roomrate!). The room also smelled horrible. There are tons of other places to stay in this area and I advise checking them out first.

For a romantic weekend, the hotel was just right for a student budget. The neighborhood was neutral, IHOP was a short drive away, and the highway was readily and quickly accessible. The room was clean and orderly, though the pillows were dreadful and knotted up my neck and back. I was very satisfied with my stay, and would consider the Howard Johnson for future escapades.

I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel. It was the only one I could find on short notice that allowed my children to stay in same room. I have three daughters they are to young to stay in another room, and I couldn't find a site that would guarantee an ajoining room. The room was large clean and comfortable.Recently remodeled I believe. It was close to the freeway which made traveling easy. There are several family restarants nearby. The only thing it didn't have was a pool ,the kids would have prefered one. Overall excellent experience. thanks

The hotel was supposed to be 4 miles from downtown San Francisco. Turned out to be 16 miles, out by the airport. It was a typical low end motel, clean bathroom, but filthy carpet and lousy breakfast. By far not worth the price we paid.

We just needed a hotel near the airport since our plane was delayed until the next morning. We were looking based on prices, so we figured it would be in bad shape. Surprisingly, the hotel room was beautiful! I think they have just done some redecorating and they did a beautiful job!!!

I was told that the airport shuttle service came every 30 minutes. We waited at the airport for over an hour. When we called to ask where it was, we were told in a rude tone "to be patient, it comes every 30 minutes" Then another 15 minutes later we got frustrated and took a cab. I specifcally stayed at this hotel because it had airport shuttle service.

I must have stayed at this hotel the same day as the previous reviewer, however, I have a completely different view. We arrived early (prior to 14:00 check in time) and the man at the front desk was great. He went out of way to accomodate us and assure our room was ready....even though we were early. Yes they were painting. I see this as a good thing. One of the painters blocking the front door to the offive ans he moved his ladder, warned my wife and I of the wet paint, and was overall a very cheerful guy. This hotel has a great cost to value ratio. It is a little far from Fisherman's wharf but i have this thing called the internet. I used it to look up where the hotel was in relation to SF downtown. I was aware of the hotel's location. You can not blame the hotel for lack of you own preparation. I recommend this hotel.

We picked this hotel through hotels.com based on it's mention of being near fisherman's wharf. On our drive into town, we drove right past fisherman's wharf and continued on for another 10 or 12 miles to south san francisco. In fact, only one taxi company serviced this area, and they wanted 40 bucks to give us a ride to fisherman's wharf. We drove up there ourselves to save the money, but this is only the first thing that upset us. The clerk at the front desk was rude when we came to check in. There was no roller in the toilet paper dispenser, so we used the roll in the bathroom by letting it sit on the countertop. This is not what one should expect in a hotel room, especially one that can be booked through hotels.com. On our drive to CA, we stopped at many truck stops and ALL of them had toilet paper dispensers that were functioning properly. There were two of us sharing the room, and we each had one towel, and one wash cloth. We had one bar of soap for both of us to use for the sink and the shower. The TV remote did not work, and the air conditioner barely cooled the room down at all. I am writing this review from the room right now, so I do not know what else will happen, but I looked out the window right now, to find that a group of maintenance workers are painting the trim of the building, and have covered up my car with plastic. The ladder they are using is standing right above my car. I understand that maintenance needs to be done, and that this really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, however, when added to the much longer list of problems we've had with this hotel since our booking with hotels.com and our arrival, I will highly recommend that you do not stay here when you visit San Francisco. In fact, this experience has completely soured my on staying at a Howard Johnson hotel period. But hey, at least the internet worked...

This was your typical small budget motel. Nothing wrong, nothing memorable. Nothing bad except the overwhelming small of air freshener. Not sure they have specific non-smoking rooms. Staff very nice and helpful, found in a tiny office. Seemed like the Indian clerk was living in a room behind it.

The hotel was under construction and they were banging on the walls early in the mornings.

Overall the hotel was not so bad. The hotel was recently under renovation, I think they forgot to finish renovating the bathroom. Th shower knobs were corroded and there was one missing. We stayed there for 4 nights on the first night we noticed there was noremote for the t.v. and that there was 80+ channels. So we asked thefront desk if we could have one he stated that it would be there tomorrow and the day came when we checked out and we were still aiting for the remote. But I must say the houskeeping crew was very nice and we always had clean towels.

The first thing that I notice about the hotel room was the strong smell of smoke. Even after opening the door for airing, the smell still lingering in the room. Desk service was not 24 hours and leaving for a flight early in the morning made me feel uncomfortable without checking out. The room was clean and comfortable for a one night stay but I would not stay there longer.

It was good for the price! We felt like it was a good bargain we were expecting the worst and it was far better then we expected!

I was guaranteed a non-smoking room and when I arrived I was given a smoking room and all they could do is give me a spray for the smoke smell in the room. It was close to the airport but that was the only positive factor.

The hotel is in a great location. Very close to the airport, and a 20 minute drive from the city. There aren't any grocery stores around, so you'll have to drive a bit to find one. Close to a gas station, close to an IHop and other small restaurants. It was kind of difficult actually getting to the hotel, especially while travelling south on the 101, and when we called for directions, the front desk wouldn't pick up the phone. But we eventually found our way. The room was clean. The beds were comfortable. The closet was HUGE. The ironing board was broken so we had to sturdy it against the wall. The iron was broken, but still worked. I'm sure if you asked for assistance they would replace the iron. The toilet seat was falling off but we were able to fix it. The curtains were falling off, but were attatched enough to give us full privacy. Don't turn on the air conditioner or heater. We started sneezing and coughing. The microwave was a bit broken, but still worked. There was no place for the toilet paper to hang so we had to leave it on the bathroom counter. The continental breakfast was actually pretty good. Coffee, orange juice, apple juice, poppyseed bread, fresh fruit and other goods were available. The manager of the hotel was very friendly and understanding. When the maids came to clean our room, they often forgot to shut the window after cleaning it, which scared us because that made it easy for people to break into our room, so we eventually put the "do not disturb" sign on the door. All in all, it was a good hotel. I would recommend this hotel to others. It was cheap, clean, and safe. Perfect for a low-budget traveller or college student.

This hotel was very nice and the staff was helpful in every way possible. The concierge even gave us free passes to the bars and lounges around the city both nights we stayed. The Sutton Place Hotel is right across the street from The Original Pancake House, which we recommend you go to. It's only a few blocks from the Magnificent Mile. The only thing about the hotel that we were not crazy about was that it did not have a pool. All in all it was a great hotel smack dab in between exciting night life and great shopping.
