Danubius Hotel Gellert - Budapeštas

I stayed at the Gellert for two nights on business. It is a very impressive building, but my room was small (I was in the cheapest room) and decor was a bit chintzy; basically the whole place could do with a bit of a refurb. There was no air conditioning so the room was stuffy. The main incentive to stay here is the free access to the Gellert spa; this can be reached by a private elevator for hotel guests leading to the main reception of the spa. It can be a bit unnerving the first time you walk through the reception in your hotel gown and flip-flops but lots of people do it so don't be embarassed! The buffet breakfast is wonderful with a huge selection of continental and cooked breakfasts and mountains of fruit. I also ate at the terrace restaurant which has a fanastic view of the Danube, Gellert hill and the Liberty Bridge - good food and hungarian folk music, although I could have done without the personal serenade as I was dining alone! Bell and restaurant staff were very helpful and friendly but some of the reception staff were a little snooty so I have marked the hotel down a bit on that. Overall I would recommend the hotel to people who like to stay in landmark/historic buildings but don't expect absolute luxury.

liked this hotel. staff helpful and very to the point. the attachment of the baths was a real plus. rooms very nice but no air conditioning and very hot (stayed in July). despite this would stay again.

I loved my stay at the Gellert and will return. Yes, the rooms are small with old furniture, but the art-nouveau decor in the main halls and baths are beautiful and the very cordial, sincerely well-meaning staff members were nicely attentive to giving me a well-needed relaxing stay. A truly generous breakfast buffet is included with the price of your room as is access to the baths. There is a 24-hour store very close by. People interested in old-world charm will love the Gellert and Budapest! Those who need everything to be like their new sub-division homes, might want to stay elsewhere.

The only complaint we had was that the bathroom in our room was well overdue for refurbishment and looked shabby, which isn't good enough for a hotel of this price and standard. However, when we told them about the broken tap, it was mended within a couple of hours, which was good service. The food was great - we had dinner in the hotel's restaurant one evening - and there was a great selection for breakfast. We also had a very good meal when we went out one evening. Absolutely loved the spa (which was why we chose this hotel) and spent a lot of time in the pools inside and out - and that meant the shabby bathroom wasn't too big a deal, as we were showering at the pool anyway. The late afternoon sun coming through the stained glass in the main hall was beautiful. We were fortunate to have blue skies and sun every day, at just the perfect time of year, all the trees in fresh green leaves, with lilac, wisteria and horse chestnut all in flower. The flower beds round Budapest are really well planted, too - it looked really fantastic. The public transport is good, with trams and buses right outside the hotel, which is in easy walking distance for the main streets and Castle Hill and Gellert Hill, too. We could have spent loads more time there, and seen so much more, but we only had a couple of full days there. But it was very relaxing and interesting and we had a wonderful break. I would love to go back, and could easily spend a lot more time there.

This hotel is very impressive from the outside but rather dated on the inside. The pool which is featured in many of the photographs only opens from May onwards. Unfortunately we went there in May. It is not a terrible hotel, but there are far nicer hotels to stay in and you can still visit the gellert. The location is very good, but the relative ease of buses around Budapest make it less of a selling point.

This was my fifth stay at the Gellert, and I do love it for nostalgic reasons and its classic thermal baths and style. I was very disappointed this time because we had a very small room and the shower in the bath was moldy and smelled strongly of mold. The whole hotel is in need of serious upgrading. In the past this has seemed to be one of its charms--Communist-era decor but well maintained and clean. This time it was merely run-down. It's still a beautiful building and an experience for first-time visitors to Budapest, but other hotels have passed it by in features, service and comfort.

Interesting weekend. The hotel have lovely friendly staff who were really helpful. The brasserie was very good- and there was also a small salon/coffee bar with snacks as well as a restaurant which we had wonderful breakfast. The room was a bit tired and the bathroom was pretty awful, but the water came out hot and it was ok for a weekend. Hotel is at the end of the bridge- where you can get accross to Pest- and the indoor market is just accross the river. We went to see the Christmas market - very pretty, but souveniers were expensive- exchange rate i suppose. Spectacular buildings- go to the Buda castle- tram outside the hotel. The spa is on one side of the hotel but run by the council I think- rather an experience! Take a towel & wear a cossie as they only give you a sheet. I think that this would be better in summer when they have the ouside pool filled and the terrace open.There is also a dentist which was highly recommended and much cheaper than in UK. There is a fantastic coffee house in the main square- cakes to die for.

I stayed there for 2 nights and it was great: the room was clean and well kept, I had access to the termal baths which was awesome to relax, it is close to the canter of the city and it is within walking distance of all the main tourists landmarks of Budapest. really a great great hotel especialy the breakfast which is excellent.

We were very happy with this hotel choice as we wanted to experience the thermal baths of Budapest and the Gellert Baths are one of the most famous! They are awesome and the hotel was marvelous! We love grand, old hotels and we were not disappointed. The service was top notch in every aspect and the front desk spoke english well and helped with every need. The room we stayed in was a "courtyard view" and was fine for us as we had just had a long jouney through eastern europe on a cruise of the Danube, but I would suggest springing for the extra for an outside room. The rooms are comfortable and clean, but the plumbing fixtures are antiques, so if you are picky about shiny new stuff you may be disappointed. It was a very great price for Budapest (or anywhere in eastern Europe)with the weak dollar. The location was close to everything that you would want to see including the Gellert Hill and Liberty Statue which is in your backyard! The public transit was at your doorstep if you are so inclined (try it!) and the best shopping is right across the Liberty Bridge, literally right in front of the hotel! It is a short distance to the famous Chain Bridge, Castle District,the Parliment as well. As far as the baths are concerned, they are a must do! You take a special elevator to them from the hotel, so it is so conveinent! I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Budapest!

Great old hotel with excellent spa and baths. Right next to tram stop taking you to a range of locations in the city. The Liberty Bridge is right across the road and an easy walk across the Danube straight onto Vaci Utcu, the main pedestrian shopping street with some nice outdoor cafes, and the fantastic Market Hall. We had a 'suite' with a separate bedroom and entrance hall, a balcony that looked onto Gellert Hill and sideways onto the Danube.

The hotel is a period piece - beautiful and elegant. We booked a superior room which was huge and overlooked the Danube. It was beautifully furnished. The built in wardrobes were antique and the rest of the furniture was reproduction antique. It was a pleasure to sit in the room and relax after sightseeing. The food and service was excellent - breakfast was a real feast. Even if you don't want to use the baths it is worth a visit to see the splendour. All staff very friendly and welcoming. There is a tram stop outside the hotel and many sights are withing walking distance of the hotel. We will definitely return to this hotel.

We were seven ladies travelling to see the sights and take in the spa treatments. Staying at Gellert Hill seemed close for the baths we wanted to visit. Not realising the hotel gave you free access to the Municipal Baths as often as you wish. We took in the city by day and headed in the afternoon to the baths and treatments. Bliss. A 'must do' even if not staying at the hotel. Like stepping back in time! From check-in to check-out we were treated well. Our rooms were upgraded and overlooking the river Danube. Spacious and clean. Requests to staff were always done quickly and pleasantly. Breakfast was hot and cold buffet, well presented and plenty of choice. Evening meal at the hotel offered better value and better food than the Hungarian Restaurant we had been recommended nearby. Only minus point - no kettle in the rooms!

The architecture of the building and the thermal baths were beautiful, but my room was very small (even by European standards) and not well maintained. The furniture was beat up, there was mildew in the shower and on the shower curtain. The socket in the bathroom did not work, so I had to dry my hair in the living area, using the t.v. as a mirror. The hotel and thermal bath staffs were pilot but not overly friendly.

The Hotel Gellert is loaded with history. Both the lobby and the spa are impressive reminders of Budapest of the 1920s. However the rooms are reminiscent of the Communist era of the 1970s - tired, depressing and in need of an update.

This was our 3rd stay in 7 years at the Gellert. It is like comfortable shoes. To stay in a hotel where the rates are very good, breakfast and full access to the hotel spa come with your nightly rate, you can't beat it. There's nothing better than putting on your robe in the morning and heading down to the thermal spa and pool before breakfast. Also, the perfect way to end a day of sight seeing. The following comment is not a criticism, but just a fact for upcoming visitors. There is a restoration underway of the men's side of the thermal baths. Everyone will be using the women's side co-ed until the restoration is finished.

A very grand hotel with good breakfast and thermal baths but the rooms are badly kept and cramped. We had 2 single beds pushed together to form a double, light bulbs broken, minimal bed sheets and poor decor. Needs renovating! Stay here if you want to experience old style eastern europe. It definately has character.

The hotel is very welcoming and the staff helpful and friendly. Having the baths inclusive and accessible from a private entrance is a superb facility. The baths are great - worth more than one trip!. Smaller rooms are cramped and in need of new fittings. Medium sized rooms perfectly good. Views of the Danube and Gellert Hill from the front and side of the hotel are unsurpassed.

Far better than the bland chains you get everywhere - the hotel had character, was comfortable and warm. Breakfast buffet good and plentyful, convenient for public transport (stop outside) and access to the spa via special lift. Staff friendly and helpful and room kept spotless.

The hotel was very nice albeit slightly worn out. Booked a double room but recieved twin with beds moved together. This was quickly resolved by reception. Rooms are very clean. Good breakfast. Excellent location.

Great after long flight--thermal bath is relaxing. Quiet room provides excellent rest. Breakfast variety is excellent. Proximity to trams,trains, and center city is more than perfect. Gellert Hotel is full of history.

a delightful stay ,the spa baths have to been seen to be believed,the hotel rooms are dated,but it would not put us off going again.very good evenig meal in the hotels main resteraunt

The single room I had overlooked a roof, and there was steam comming out of a pipe, which did not make for an attractive view. The furniture and decor was at least fifty years old, though the room had a very nice wallpaper. The bathroom was large, with few toilet articles. The breakfast was very good and had a good selection of pastries, cheese and cold cuts. The spa was under a separate management and it was open to general public, and very crowded in the afternoon.

Vi var kjempefornøyd med alt. Følte vi bodde kongelig på de to rommene vi hadde fått nå. Men litt vanskelig å finne frem til de forskjellige spa behandlingene og opplegget de hadde der. Men det var godt.

Standart för det priset dåligt.Kanske under komunismen var bra-men inte idag.Badrum med insekter. Var mycket besviken!! Inträde till SPA var plaster på såret.

Centralt beläget hotell med mycket bra service. Detta i kombination med hotellets badanläggning gör att vi är mycket nöjda med vår 3 dagars vistelse i Budapest.

Gellert var nog precis som jag trott, med tanke på det jag läst innan. Personalen var fantastiskt och hela stället andas gammalt lyxhotell. Mitt rum var dock litet och möblerna rätt slitna och sängen i kortaste laget. Men badet är en klar tillgång och läget bra med spårvagnar åt alla håll med täta mellanrum utmärkt. Jag tyckte det var väl värt vad jag betalade och jag skulle gärna åka tillbaka.

Når 4 separate vurderinger på hver 4 points giver helhedsindtrykket 5 skyldes det de kurbadefaciliteter som er inkluderet under opholdet på Hotel Gellert. At kunne starte hver dag med at lade sig sænke ned i et 38 grader varmt bassin, gå i tørluftbad, lade sig massere eller svømme i den enestående udsmykkede svømmehal -altsammen fra 1918 er fantastisk. Alle bade er inkluderet når man bor på hotellet. Hotellet er frisket op et par gange, men gør stadig et "autentsik gammelt" indtryk. Nogle vil måske finde det ramponeret, men den pris betaler jeg i hvert fald gerne for en atmosfære, der stadig rækkker 90 år tilbage i tiden. Vores værelse lå til gaden med balkon og med en enestående udsigt over Donau. Den oprindelige art noveau udsmykning overalt i den kolossale bygning er en oplevelse i sig selv. Bortset fra den glimrende morgenmadsbuffet, var hverken brasserie eller restaurant noget at skrive hjem om, men der er jo masser af glimrende og billige spisesteder over alt i Budapest. Prøv det (før det er for sent)!!! Moderne international hotelatmosfære kan man kede sig i alle steder. Hotel Gellert er i helt sin egen klasse.

Dejligt hotel med venligt personale. storslået udsigt over floden, pragtfuldt termal badeanlæg som man har gratis adgang til. Sporvogn lige til døren.

De forskjellige badene/varme kildene i underetasjen var helt topp. Gratis for hotellets gjester

Annars bra men ingen ventil varken i rummet eller i badrummet (vån. 3-4). Fick ventilera genom badrumsfönstret, även på natten. Kallt första natten, värmen inte på. Nästa natt flyttade jag sängen till elementet. Bra safe-låsning med eget plastkort. Bra frukost, bekväma transporter i spårvagn/bussar. Pensionärer med EU-pass åker gratis i lokaltrafik.

Fine gamle rom, bra service og bra mat i brasseriet

PLUS Vackert hotell väl värt att uppleva! Anslutning till Gellértbadet som man oxå bör besöka! Gå bara över bron så är du i city! Hjälpsam personal! Bra frukostbuffé! MINUS Ganska slitet trots renovering tycker jag... Om man åker som par så bör man veta att Gellértbadet till största delen är uppdelat för kvinnor-män. Hotellet motsvarade mina förväntningar!

Kanon morgenbuffet, dårlig internetforbindelse, noget slidt men value for money

Vi følte os absolut velkomne og fik hurtig, personlig og både sød og humoristisk service, bl.a. til at finde dejlig restaurant.

Gellert har stil og klasse. Gammelt, ja, men veldig koselig. Benytt deg av spa-tilbudet som følger med hotelloppholdet. Ligger sentral, gangavstand til "alt". 2. gang jeg er der i år. NB: Ingen aktiviteter for barn (ut over spa`et da). Hotellet skulle hatt et aktivitetsrom, med biljard eller lignende da det kan bli kjedelig for de minste

Klockrent hotell för den som vill bo flott och centralt. Att sedan ha tillträde till badet är ett extra plus. Jag reste med min 14 månaders son och vi blev mycket väl mottagna. Hjälpsam personal både i lobbyn och i "Business Center" i hotellet där man kan låna Internetuppkopplad dator (om man inte har en egen laptop, trådlöst Inernet finns i hela byggnaden). Bra frukostbuffé. Enda nackdelen är att rummen ut mot vägen är mycket lyhörda, packa ner ett par öronproppar om man är känslig. Rekommenderar verkligen Hotel Gellért!

Obschon das Zimmer winzig und alt war, Renovationsarbeiten uns um 8.00Uhr aus dem Schlaf rissen, uns am ersten Tag ein Verletzter/Toter vor die Füsse fiel (Bauunfall), das Badezimmer/WC überschwemmte, die Brücke zur Vaci ut gesperrt war..... hat es uns gefallen. Das altehrwürdige Hotel hat es irgendwie in sich. Die Angestellten sind sehr hilfsbereit. Das Frühstück einzigartig. Essen und Service im Bistro perfekt. Und das Bad; ein Traum. Zwar ein Labyrinth, aber unbezahlbar. Ich glaubte nicht wirklich an ein Wunder, aber bereits am fünften Tag linderten sich meine Schmerzen merklich. Unglaublich! Die Lage ist super, man kann alles zu Fuss erreichen.

Hotellet är oerhört charmigt, utsikten över Donau var toppen med tillhörande balkong. Personalen var artiga, snabba och hjälpsamma! Hotellets placering med nära till centrum, thermal bad och beauty salon - uppskattade vi. För mig är Ungern = thermal bad.

Danubius hotel Gellert is amazing. I stayed here with my boyfriend for three nights on May 23- May 25 2008. Wonderful room with crystal chandelier and we had our own balcony. The atmosphere is magnificent and the staff are helpful and focused on customer service. Excellent breakfast-buffet with a great selection of both continental and English breakfast options. Thermal bath for men and women, sun terraces and indoor and outdoor swimming pools is free for hotelguests and it's wonderful.

Wir waren zu zweit für fünf Tage in Budapest sehenswert Das Hotel liegt direkt an der Donau die Zimmer mit super Ausblick sind besser ausgestattet größer und damit empfehlenswert Sämtliches Personal war sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend Das Frühstücksbuffet ist lecker Insgesamt ein sehr schöner Aufenthalt wenn man auf designermäßig eingerichtete Räumlichkeiten verzichten kann Der Charme der vergangenen Zeit blieb erhalten
